Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have called on the National Working Committee (NWC) to reschedule the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to March 13.
This decision was reached during a meeting held on Friday in Asaba, Delta State. In their communique, the governors expressed dissatisfaction with the NWC, led by acting national chairman Umar Damagum, which had postponed the NEC meeting twice in the last three months. This decision had been rejected by the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), and the meeting was subsequently rescheduled for February.
The NEC is the highest decision-making body of the PDP, comprising key party members including state governors, former presidents, former vice-presidents, and principal officers of the national assembly. Section 31(4) of the PDP constitution mandates that the NEC meeting be held at least once every three months, with the last meeting taking place in April 2024.
In the communique, the governors highlighted the socio-economic and security challenges facing the country, commending the efforts of member states in addressing these issues. They also expressed satisfaction with the ongoing attempts to resolve the crisis surrounding the position of the National Secretary, reaffirming their support for the Court of Appeal’s judgment.
The governors recommended that the NWC implement the court’s decision effectively and advised that the NEC meeting be rescheduled for March 13, 2025, after reviewing the legal requirements for such a meeting.
Additionally, the governors urged the federal government to reconsider its macro-economic policies, emphasizing that these policies have exacerbated hardships for Nigerians. They also called on the security agencies to intensify efforts to combat rising attacks by non-state actors, while expressing confidence in the PDP’s ability to restore the country to an era of manageable living costs, improved security, and national unity.
The communique was signed by Bala Mohammed, the governor of Bauchi State, and the chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum.
