PDP National Treasurer, Alhaji Ahmed Yayare, Calls for Unity to Defeat APC in 2027
In a series of significant statements across the country, key leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) underscored the importance of unity within the party and its commitment to providing quality leadership in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
Alhaji Ahmed Yayare, National Treasurer of the PDP, made his remarks during a visit to Bayelsa State, where he led the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) on a visit to Governor Duoye Diri at his country home in Sampou, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area. Yayare emphasized the crucial need for the party to stay united, stating that PDP remains the only viable opposition party capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.
“If the PDP does not take over the leadership of the country, it could be the end of democracy in Nigeria,” Yayare stated. He expressed confidence that the party, fueled by the public’s growing disenchantment with the current government, would win more governorship seats in 2027. He added, “The cry of hunger and poverty is too much in the land. The 36 states of Nigeria are yearning for the return of PDP.”
Yayare also urged PDP governors to work together and support one another to ensure the party’s success in future elections. He highlighted that the APC could struggle to campaign due to growing dissatisfaction with its leadership, making it imperative for the PDP to step up and offer a credible alternative to Nigerians.
PDP Unity and the Role of Governors
Governor Duoye Diri of Bayelsa, who also spoke during the visit, emphasized the importance of internal unity within the party. He urged PDP governors to collaborate closely, stating, “As governors, we need to work together and do what is right, without minding whose ox is gored.” Diri stressed the need to avoid internal divisions and political infighting, advocating for a consensus-based approach to resolving party issues.
Diri also reaffirmed his commitment to PDP, stating that he was not interested in polarizing the party. “If anybody is bigger than the party, the person can leave,” he said. “We cannot be in PDP in the daytime and at night be in another party. We need to do in-house cleansing.”
Governor Diri expressed strong support for the idea of forming a mega party with PDP at its core, aimed at taking over power at the federal level in 2027. He called on his fellow governors to strengthen the party and to work towards building a better Nigeria.
Bauchi Governor Reaffirms Commitment to PDP Vision
In Bauchi State, Governor Senator Bala Mohammed also reasserted his commitment to advancing PDP’s vision for national development. Mohammed made his statement following a condolence visit from the NWC, who came to express their sympathy after the death of his stepmother. He praised his stepmother’s remarkable life, and during the visit, reaffirmed his dedication to contributing to the party’s goals.
Governor Mohammed further emphasized that now is the time for PDP to strengthen its position and focus on delivering more to the people of Bauchi State. He added that while discussions about 2027 were premature, the party needed to focus on the present and continue to improve the lives of Nigerians.
PDP Gains Momentum as APC Members Defect
In a significant political development, thousands of youths and other members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bauchi State officially defected to the PDP, marking the first major defection of the year. Usman Adamu, a prominent youth leader from the northern zone, led the defection at a ceremony held at the township stadium in Azare, Bauchi State. Adamu cited the impressive governance and development strides of Senator Bala Mohammed as his reason for joining the PDP.
“I am here to contribute to the development of the state,” Adamu said. “Senator Bala Mohammed has transformed the state to an enviable position, now emulated by all. The state is now in its right position. I am here to be part of the development strive.”
The defection was welcomed by the state chairman of PDP, Sama’ila Adamu Burga, who described it as a positive move that would further strengthen the party in Bauchi. Burga, represented by his deputy chairman Falalu Mustapha, assured the new defectors that they would be welcomed into the party with all privileges and rights of membership.
Conclusion
As PDP prepares for the upcoming electoral battles, party leaders are stressing the importance of unity and strengthening the party’s foundations. With defections from the APC and calls for internal cooperation, PDP is positioning itself as the main alternative to the ruling APC in 2027, while reinforcing its commitment to national development and good governance. As the party consolidates its power, it remains determined to provide Nigerians with the leadership they seek in these challenging times.
