“PDP Strengthens Democracy, Resolves Ebonyi Crisis, Says Chief Boniface Igwe”
Chief Boniface Igwe, a prominent chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), assured party members over the weekend that the PDP remains steadfast in its commitment to strengthening the rule of law and democracy in Nigeria.
In a press briefing, Igwe emphasized that the PDP was founded on the principles of rule of law, noting that despite the party’s ongoing leadership crisis, it would emerge stronger and more unified. He pointed to the recent South-East stakeholders meeting with the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) at the national Secretariat as a significant step in resolving the leadership issues in Ebonyi, marking the crisis as officially settled.
Igwe praised the ratification of the Federal High Court’s ruling, which nullified the ward, local government, and state congresses in Ebonyi, asserting that this demonstrated the party’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring internal party democracy. He also expressed his support for the appointment of Chief Chidiebere Egwu as the new South-East National Vice Chairman of the PDP, following the removal of Chief Ali Odefa.
Echoing the sentiments of other stakeholders, Igwe acknowledged that the peaceful resolution of the Ebonyi crisis had ended the leadership deadlock that followed the 2023 general election. He called on party supporters, particularly in Ebonyi, to remain firm in their loyalty to the PDP, which he believes is now well-positioned to challenge the ruling All Progressives Party (APC) in the next election.
Igwe commended the leadership of the South-East and PDP NWC for their efforts in resolving the crisis and lauded the unwavering commitment of party leaders and elders to the party’s founding ideals. He also paid tribute to Chief Ifeanyichukwuma Odii (Anyichuks), the PDP gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 elections in Ebonyi, for his role in fostering peace and promoting democratic values in the region.
The South-East PDP stakeholders’ meeting with the NWC also confirmed the replacement of the former national vice chairman, Chief Ali Odefa, with Chief Chidiebere Egwu, marking a turning point for the party in the region.
