Peter Obi Declares 2027 Presidential Bid, Promises One-Term Stability Deal

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has officially declared his intention to run for president in the 2027 general elections, promising to deliver a government rooted in stability, security, and economic revitalisation.

Speaking during a live interactive session with supporters on the social platform X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday night, Obi stated unequivocally:
“I will be on the ballot in 2027. If there’s an agreement restricting me to a single term, I will gladly comply and exit office by May 28, 2031.”

The declaration, contained in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Ibrahim Umar, comes amid intense speculation over potential coalitions involving Obi and other opposition figures, particularly former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Obi, however, dismissed rumours that he had agreed to be Atiku’s running mate in a proposed 2027 alliance.
“I have not joined any discussions on joint tickets with Atiku or anyone else. But I am open to a coalition built on shared patriotism and solutions to Nigeria’s problems,” he clarified.

‘Nigeria Is at War — We Must Fix It’

The former Anambra State governor described Nigeria’s current situation as dire, warning that the country is “at war” with itself due to spiralling insecurity and economic hardship.

“If the coalition is not about ending the killings in Benue, Zamfara, and other places… If it’s not about reviving our economy or putting food on Nigerians’ tables, count me out,” he declared.

Obi pledged that, if elected, his administration would restore stability within two years and prioritise security, education, and poverty eradication.

One-Term Presidency Conditional on National Stability

While Obi confirmed his willingness to serve only a single term if that would secure coalition support, he insisted that meaningful progress must be made within that period.

“I will bring stability to Nigeria within two years in office. Leaders should sit in Nigeria and fix Nigeria. My record in Anambra speaks for itself,” he asserted.

Obi Criticises Tinubu’s St Lucia Trip

The former presidential candidate also took a swipe at President Bola Tinubu’s reported trip to St Lucia, describing it as insensitive and disconnected from the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.

“Tinubu has never slept a night in any state outside Lagos since assuming office, yet he’s spending 8 nights in St Lucia—a place smaller than Ajegunle. Meanwhile, Nigerians are dying from hunger, insecurity, and economic collapse,” Obi lamented.

‘2027 Will Be Different — Votes Must Count’

Looking ahead to the 2027 polls, Obi promised a non-violent but uncompromising campaign that would demand electoral integrity.

“Our votes will count in 2027. We will insist that the right thing is done before results are announced in Abuja,” he declared.

He also listed his priorities for his first 100 days in office:
✔ Security
✔ Education
✔ Poverty eradication
✔ Cost-cutting in governance
✔ Zero tolerance for corruption

Obi vowed to strengthen party politics, discourage post-election defections, and promote balanced governance through respect for the principle of power rotation.

Clarifying Labour Party Leadership and Supreme Court Ruling

On internal Labour Party matters, Obi disclosed that efforts were underway to secure Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recognition for the Nenadi Usman-led faction, in line with a recent Supreme Court ruling.

History with Atiku: Talks, But No Alliance Yet

Obi’s declaration comes amid reports of private meetings between him and Atiku earlier this year in the UK, where a one-term coalition proposal was allegedly discussed.

Sources suggest that Atiku offered to run for a single term and hand over to Obi in 2031, reviving memories of their 2019 ticket under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which they lost to former President Muhammadu Buhari.

However, Obi maintains that any alliance must prioritise Nigeria’s urgent needs—not political expediency.

“If it’s not about saving Nigeria, I’m not interested,” he concluded.
