“Peter Obi Rejects Power-Driven Coalitions, Calls for Focus on Nigeria’s Welfare”
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has firmly stated that he has no interest in any coalition that focuses solely on seizing power without addressing the critical issues facing Nigeria and its people.
Speaking in Abuja on Monday during a national conference themed “Strengthening Nigeria’s Democracy: Pathways to Good Governance and Political Integrity,” Obi emphasized that the country is in a state of distress, with poverty increasing daily and citizens enduring significant hardship.
The conference, organized by prominent groups like the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy & Development (Centre LSD) and the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), gathered key leaders and thinkers to discuss Nigeria’s democratic future.
In response to suggestions of a coalition, Obi made it clear that he was not interested in a power grab. “What’s important is to focus on Nigeria and its future, not just on forming coalitions for the sake of power,” he said. “We must discuss the real issues: How do we secure Nigerians? How do we care for the common person? How do we ensure our children receive education? These are the priorities for now.”
Obi also highlighted the problem of political monetization, which he believes fuels corruption. “We must stop the practice where public funds are stolen and used to win elections,” he said. “When that happens, those who win gain not just power but immunity from prosecution. This is what drives the theft of public resources, and it must end.”
The Labour Party chieftain’s comments reflect his ongoing commitment to addressing Nigeria’s deeper structural problems, emphasizing that the nation’s leadership must put the well-being of its people first.
