The Bauchi State Police Command has successfully foiled a robbery attempt and arrested three suspects involved in targeting bank customers across Bauchi, Borno, and Kano States.
In a statement released on Friday, the command’s spokesman, CSP Ahmed Wakil, revealed that operatives from the State Intelligence Department (SID) apprehended the suspects who had been using locally fabricated master keys to unlawfully access victims’ vehicles and properties.
Wakil explained that the suspects would monitor bank customers withdrawing large sums of money, and then follow them to their destinations with the intention of robbing them. Once the target was located, the criminals would use their fabricated keys to unlock the vehicle and steal from it.
The police spokesperson noted that the arrests took place on January 28, after the suspects attempted to rob a businessman who had just withdrawn money from the FCMB Bank in Bauchi. The victim, realizing he was being followed, quickly alerted the police, leading to the arrest of the three suspects.
During interrogation, the suspects confessed to their involvement in the crime and provided useful information that could help capture their ringleader, who remains on the run.
The police recovered several items during the operation, including three locally fabricated master keys, two Toyota Honda saloon cars, and other exhibits.
Wakil urged members of the public to be vigilant when leaving banks and to report any suspicious activity to the police promptly.
