Protest Killing: Don’t politicise unfortunate incidents – Kano Police caution NNPP
The Nigeria Police has cautioned the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), against politicizing the unfortunate killing of one person by a Police Inspector, during a clash between two rival groups at the Kurna Asabe area of the state.
The NNPP had accused the Nigeria Police of shooting dead a young man, Salisu Player, somewhere around Kurna in Dala Local Government Area of Kano State.
The NNPP said in a press release signed by its acting National Chairman, Abba Kawu Ali, that the man killed was one of the three people shot while the others were in critical condition.
The incident occurred yesterday evening during a peaceful protest.
However, the Kano Command of the Nigeria Police quickly reacted to NNPP’s position, warning against politicizing the unfortunate incident.
The Command’s PPRO, CPS Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the incident had nothing to do with the NNPP protests, it was rather a rival group clash on issues that led to misunderstanding between them.
The National Chairman of the NNPP said they have always asked the citizens to do their protest in a peaceful manner and the protest around Kurna where Salisu Player was shot, though spontaneous, was not different.
“It would appear that men of the Nigeria Police are ill-trained for handling even peaceful protests as we regret the recorded death which is painful and unfortunate,” the party said.
“We commiserate with friends and family of the deceased as we urge all the people of Kano to remain calm and restrained from acting outside the rule of law.”
