Pump price increase: Nigeria approaching failed state – Secondus

Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, has warned that Nigeria is edging closer to becoming a failed state due to the recent surge in petrol prices.

Speaking in an interview in Abuja, he criticized the Bola Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC) administration for its inability to provide effective leadership over the past two years.

“All the indices are pointing to a failed state and democracy. We need to pray for our country because the masses are in trouble,” Secondus stated, emphasizing the suffering faced by citizens. He noted that the pump price of petrol has now reached N1,100, with some areas reporting prices as high as N1,200, exacerbating the hardships for many Nigerians.

Secondus also addressed the ongoing crisis within the PDP, particularly in his home state of Rivers. He argued that the discord is unnecessary and could have been avoided if everyone fulfilled their roles. He asserted that there cannot be two leaders within the party, affirming that Governor Siminalaye Fubara is the rightful leader of the PDP in Rivers and deserves respect from all members.

“There are no two captains in a ship. Governor Fubara is our governor and the leader of our state,” he emphasized, expressing hope that the internal issues within the party would soon be resolved.

In a veiled reference to dissenting party members led by Chief Nyesom Wike, Secondus urged them to recognize Fubara’s leadership and called for a reduction in tensions to foster progress in the state. “I feel very pained about the state because business and investors are running away. They should tone it down,” he advised.

Additionally, Secondus advocated for judicial reforms to protect Nigeria’s fragile democracy, stressing that the judiciary is a critical arm of government that must function effectively. “We all are looking for improvement and reform in the judiciary,” he concluded.
