Reinstate NSIP amid rising hunger, nationwide protest – Adeyanju tells Tinubu

Amid the prevailing hardship plaguing Nigeria, Deji Adeyanju, a prominent human rights activist has urged President Bola Tinubu to reconsider the suspension of the National Social Investment Programmes.

Adeyanju said the recent protests in Niger, Kano, and Kogi have shown the gravity of the situation Nigerians were experiencing and the urgent need for Tinubu to take decisive action.

Recall that Tinubu had suspended all administered programmes by the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA) over alleged financial fraud by Halima Shehu, the chief executive officer.

However, Adeyanju warned that the continued suspension of those programmes have dire consequences on Nigerians.

In a statement he signed, Adeyanju said: “While we acknowledge that the suspension of all administered programmes by the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA) was initiated as part of the ongoing investigation into alleged financial malfeasance by Halima Shehu, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NSIPA, we urge President Tinubu to recognize the dire consequences of the continued suspension on the lives of ordinary citizens.”

The activist noted that Tinubu’s concerns regarding operational lapses and improprieties surrounding payments to the program beneficiaries were valid.

Adeyanju said Tinubu should reach out to his sense of duty and compassion for the suffering Nigerians.

“Reconsider the suspension of the national social investment programmes and take immediate steps to reinstate them,” he added.
