Review of senior secondary schools’ curriculum nearing completion – FG

The federal government on Monday said the review of the senior secondary school curriculum is almost completed.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, disclosed this on Monday at the 2025 International Conference of the African Curriculum Association, hosted by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) in Abuja.

The ministry had recently unveiled a new curriculum for basic and technical education, describing it as “future-ready” and designed to equip learners with 21st-century skills.

Represented by the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, Alausa said while the basic education curriculum (Primary 1-6 and JSS 1-3) had already been completed and approved, the senior secondary review was at its final stage

According to him, the revised curriculum is competency-based, outcome-oriented, and learner-centred, with reduced content overload.

It introduces new subject areas such as digital literacy, robotics, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies, while also emphasising values, citizenship, and national heritage.

“The reform process seeks to ensure learnability and improve learning outcomes across subjects. Curriculum and subject offerings have been streamlined to align with global standards and promote effective teaching and learning,” he said.

Executive Secretary of the NERDC, Prof. Salisu Shehu, in his presentation, said curriculum design must reflect the realities of a changing social system.

He noted that today’s learners demand flexible, personalised education connected to real-world experiences and future opportunities.

He added that the NERDC had incorporated 21st-century skills into the revised 9-Year Basic Education Curriculum, aligning it with the needs of employability, inclusivity, and global citizenship.
