Rivers State Governor Donates N50 Million for Widows of Fallen Heroes
Rivers State Governor, Siminialayi Fubara, has announced the immediate release of N50 million to support the widows of fallen heroes in the state, marking his celebration of Armed Forces Remembrance Day. The gesture is aimed at helping these widows address crucial needs such as school fees, house rents, and business support.
Speaking during the event, Fubara addressed a gathering of legionnaires, guests, and members of the armed forces, stating that the donation would help alleviate the economic burdens faced by the families of soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of Nigeria. He emphasized that the ceremony was an opportunity to honor the bravery of veterans whose dedication has safeguarded the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The governor also reflected on the nation’s ongoing security challenges, which include internal threats like terrorism and armed insurgency. He commended the armed forces for their unwavering commitment to defending the country and acknowledged the immense personal costs, as many soldiers have paid with their lives, while others have returned with life-altering injuries.
“Only the brave can forsake the comfort of family and home to protect the lives and freedom of millions,” Fubara said. “Without their heroism, the country would not continue to enjoy the peace and freedom we cherish today.”
Governor Fubara also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritizing the welfare of the Nigerian Armed Forces and pledged continued loyalty, support, and collaboration from the Rivers State government.
He reminded the audience that Armed Forces Remembrance Day serves as a moment to reflect on the responsibility we have to support the families of fallen heroes, particularly the widows, children, and aged parents they leave behind.
“As a government, we remain committed to the welfare of our armed forces, both serving and retired, as well as their families,” Fubara said. “In Rivers State, we have fulfilled our past promises to the Nigerian Legion and will continue to implement policies and programs to improve their living conditions.”
The governor also called on citizens and private organizations to extend their support to these families, helping them overcome the challenges they face. He stressed that the peace and security of the nation is a collective responsibility and urged all citizens to rally behind the armed forces.
In a touching display of support, Fubara pledged the N50 million donation, which would be used to help the widows cover essential expenses. He also assured them that this contribution was a small token of appreciation for the sacrifices their loved ones made for the country.
ACC Kuu Promise, the Acting State Chairman of the Nigerian Legion in Rivers State, expressed gratitude to the governor for sponsoring the event and for his ongoing support of veterans’ welfare. He described the governor’s actions as vital to the well-being and sustenance of the children of the fallen heroes.
Promise also appealed to the governor for assistance in securing a location for the legionnaires’ office at the Isaac Boro Park Military Cenotaph, where the fallen heroes are commemorated annually.
