Sacked Lagos Monarch Fights Back, Seeks Reinstatement at Court of Appeal
The embattled traditional ruler of Agbowa-Ikosi, Oba Owolabi Saheed Momson, has approached the Court of Appeal in Lagos, seeking to overturn the judgment that stripped him of his throne.
In a motion filed by his legal counsel, Gbenga Ojo, the monarch is asking the court to nullify the May 30, 2025 ruling that sacked him and to suspend the execution of the judgment. He is also demanding his immediate reinstatement as the duly recognised Abowa of Agbowa-Ikosi, pending the outcome of his appeal.
Oba Momson, installed by the Lagos State Government in May 2023, insists that he was blindsided by the legal proceedings that led to his removal. In a sworn affidavit, he revealed that he only learned of the court’s decision through town gossip.
“I was never served with any Notice of Appeal, nor was I informed about any hearing by Prince Babatunde Adenusi and others who challenged my ascension to the throne,” the monarch stated.
According to him, the first hint of the legal blow came on June 1, 2025, when jubilant members of the Adenusi family paraded the streets of Agbowa, proclaiming his dethronement.
Oba Momson, who was in his palace holding a meeting with his chiefs and Baales at the time, said the news prompted him to instruct his legal team to investigate immediately.
The case has reignited tensions within the Agbowa-Ikosi community, as the legal battle over the town’s royal stool intensifies.
