Sallah Shutdown: Kano Police Cancel Emirs’ Festivities—Again

The Kano State Police Command has once again banned all Sallah celebrations and traditional Durbar processions involving the two Emirs of Kano—Muhammadu Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero—citing serious security concerns.

The directive, issued in collaboration with other security agencies, comes ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir festivities and follows similar restrictions imposed during the recent Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.

In a statement released Tuesday, Police Public Relations Officer SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa said the ban is part of a broader effort to prevent “unforeseen incidents” and ensure peace across the state.

“Comprehensive security measures are in place for a hitch-free celebration,” Kiyawa said, calling on worshippers to remain peaceful and law-abiding.

The decision, according to the police, follows intelligence reports that certain groups planned to use the high-profile Durbar events to instigate unrest and disrupt public order. After consultations with security stakeholders, the command opted for a total suspension of the celebrations.

The enforcement includes:

  • A ban on horse and animal riding during the festivities

  • No car racing or reckless driving

  • A prohibition on displaying or carrying firearms or dangerous items

  • A warning to parents to monitor their children and keep them away from subversive acts

The command emphasized that any violation would attract full legal consequences and urged residents to avoid any action that could disturb the fragile peace.

The police also extended condolences to the families of Kano athletes who died in a tragic road accident while returning from the National Sports Festival, before ending the statement with a goodwill message wishing all residents a safe and happy Sallah.
