Segun Sowunmi: I Didn’t Seek Appointment from Tinubu, Told Him to Prepare for Youth Succession
Segun Sowunmi, a former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Ogun State, has urged President Bola Tinubu to start planning for succession, emphasizing the need to prepare younger leaders for Nigeria’s future.
Sowunmi met with President Tinubu at the Lagos residence on Monday and later addressed criticisms of his visit in an interview with Arise News on Tuesday evening.
He denied discussing or seeking any appointment during the meeting, stating, “I did not discuss the possibility of any appointment with President Tinubu, nor was I offered any. That’s not the kind of conversation I should be having with him.”
Sowunmi explained the nature of their conversation, saying he asked the President if he was considering succession planning given the hard work involved in governance. “Won’t this country think on how to move to younger people?” he queried.
The former spokesperson to ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar also clarified his political stance, saying his loyalty to the PDP remains intact. “My political course is not just opposition. I’ve been loyal to the PDP. Nobody should think I’m opposing for opposition’s sake.”
He dismissed claims that he needed permission from the party before leaving, adding, “I greeted the President, took a picture, and they’re going gaga. I’m not going to fall for that cheap madness.”
