Senate President Akpabio Calls for Renewed Commitment to Nation-Building

Senator Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate, has called on his colleagues to renew their commitment to the task of fixing Nigeria, urging them to include this in their New Year resolutions.

Delivering his welcome address titled “Rising To The Greatness of Our Calling” upon the Senate’s resumption after the Yuletide and New Year break, Akpabio emphasized the urgency of transforming Nigeria into the country of its citizens’ dreams, one that stands as a beacon of hope for Africa and the world.

“Let us resolve to rededicate ourselves to the task of fixing Nigeria—transforming it into the country of our dreams, the pride of Africa, and a beacon of hope for the world,” Akpabio said.

He reminded the senators of their immediate responsibility in considering the national budget, a document that represents the aspirations of millions of Nigerians. “This is not just a financial document; it is the blueprint of the hopes of our people,” he noted, urging that every aspect of the budget reflect the nation’s collective dreams and drive progress, equity, and justice.

Akpabio also highlighted the importance of completing electoral reforms, stressing that strengthening Nigeria’s democracy through transparent and credible elections is not just a duty but a moral obligation. “Electoral reform is our chance to gift the Nigerian people a system that is transparent, credible, and reflective of their will,” he stated.

The Senate President then called on his colleagues to remain steadfast in prayer for Nigeria’s peace and unity, emphasizing that collective intercession is powerful in guiding the country’s leadership. He also noted the historical significance of the present moment, as Nigeria nears the end of the first quarter of the 21st century.

“History is calling on us to make a difference—to write a new narrative for our nation, one of progress, justice, and boundless possibilities,” Akpabio said, urging his fellow senators to rise to the occasion. He reminded them that their work in the Senate is not only about legislation but about shaping Nigeria’s future and leaving a lasting legacy.

Akpabio’s call was a powerful reminder that Nigeria’s future depends on the collective efforts of its leaders, and he urged the Senate to unite in purpose and dedication to the task of nation-building. “Nigeria is counting on us. The time to act is now,” he concluded.
