“Senator Ita Enang Criticizes 2025 Budget for Lack of Funds to Deliver Key Projects”
Senator Ita Enang has raised concerns that President Bola Tinubu may struggle to secure reelection in 2027 due to insufficient funds allocated in the 2025 proposed budget for key projects.
Enang, who served as a lawmaker in the 7th National Assembly, criticized the proposed budget, emphasizing that the allocations to vital sectors are too low. He argued that this would hamper the completion of important infrastructure projects and leave the president with little to show for his first term.
Enang warned that with the current budgetary provisions, President Tinubu may find it difficult to justify his reelection bid. He pointed out that, by the end of 2025, the president should be able to commission projects to highlight his administration’s achievements, but this may not be possible with the current budget’s constraints.
“I have read the budget and gone through almost all the sectors. It is not reflective, and it is incapable of giving Mr. President projects to commission which he can be proud of in 2026,” Enang stated. “By the end of 2025, Mr. President is supposed to commission those projects, but what will he commission if they are uncompleted? In most areas that we should showcase during the campaigns, we may not have what to show if we have this level of budgeting.”
Enang further advised the president’s team to prioritize key projects, establish clear deadlines, and clearly identify which initiatives are critical for the country’s development before passing the budget. He stressed that the economic team should adopt a strategic approach to ensure that significant projects are completed in time to feature prominently during Tinubu’s reelection campaign.
The senator’s comments follow the presentation of the ₦49.7 trillion 2025 budget proposal by President Tinubu to the National Assembly in December 2024. With lawmakers set to resume budget discussions on February 4, 2025, Enang’s concerns could influence how the final budget is shaped and allocated.
