Senator Ned Nwoko Set to Defect from PDP to APC Amid Frustration in Delta North

Senator Ned Nwoko, the lawmaker representing Delta North in the National Assembly, is poised to officially leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and join the All Progressives Congress (APC) due to growing frustrations with the party’s handling of issues in Delta North.

Gloria Okolugbo, Nwoko’s Director of Communications, revealed on Arise TV that the senator had already informed his supporters, constituents, and stakeholders in Delta North about his intention to defect from the PDP. Okolugbo explained that Nwoko’s decision comes after repeated frustrations with the PDP, especially under the leadership of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

According to Okolugbo, Senator Nwoko had hoped to work collaboratively with the PDP to bring good governance to the Anioma people but felt increasingly marginalized within the party. She specifically pointed to the lack of support for key projects in Delta North, such as the Okpai Independent Power Project (IPP), which is expected to provide electricity to over 60 communities, and the Ogwashi-Uku Dam, intended to supply water to surrounding communities.

“The senator believed his efforts to bring development to Delta North were being undermined,” Okolugbo said. “Despite being the only PDP senator in Delta State, he has not received the support needed to fulfill his campaign promises to the people.”

The Communications Director also criticized the PDP for its lack of internal democracy and suggested that the party’s actions had left Nwoko with no choice but to seek an alternative in the APC. She disclosed that tensions are already rising within the PDP camp as Nwoko prepares to make his defection public.

“What I can tell you is that today, Senator Ned Nwoko held a consultative meeting with his constituents to inform them of his interest to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party. With the concluded arrangements by the senator representing Delta North, the APC will now have all three senators from Delta State in its fold,” she added.

Okolugbo emphasized that the senator had made numerous attempts to resolve issues within the PDP’s internal structures, but factionalization within the party, along with the marginalization of Delta North, left him with little choice but to consider leaving the party.

“This development could be a major blow to the PDP in Delta State, as it means the ruling APC will now control all three senate seats from the state,” she said.

Nwoko’s decision to join the APC is seen as part of a broader shift in Delta’s political landscape, as the senator hopes to work more effectively for the development of Delta North under the leadership of the ruling party.
