. Senator Orji Uzor Kalu Appointed as Chairman of New Senate Committee on South East Development
In a groundbreaking announcement, the Senate has appointed Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia-North under the APC, as the pioneer Chairman of the newly established Senate Committee on South East Development Commission (SEDC). This commission, a vital part of President Bola Tinubu’s regional development initiative, is designed to address critical challenges in the South East.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, signaling a significant step toward regional empowerment. Senator Kalu, the former Governor of Abia State, takes over from his previous role as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Privatisation.
Joining him in this pivotal role is Senator Ken Eze from Ebonyi Central, who will serve as the Vice Chairman of the committee. Other members of the committee will be announced soon, further strengthening the commission’s leadership.
Under Kalu’s direction, the committee will play a crucial role in overseeing the South East Development Commission. This includes tackling major issues like civil restitution, erosion control, infrastructure restoration, and security improvements in the region.
Additionally, the Senate confirmed 18 members of the Commission, led by Dr. Emeka Nworgu as Chairman, and Hon. Mark Okoye as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. Other key figures include Ugochukwu H. Agballah, Hon. Okey Kzenwa, and Chief Hyacinth Ikpor, among others.
This bold step by the Senate promises a new chapter for the South East, with a focused approach to addressing long-standing developmental challenges. The Commission’s work is expected to be a game-changer in regional progress and transformation.
