Senator Shehu Sani Highlights Key Challenges Facing Northern Nigeria’s Education System
Senator Shehu Sani, former representative of Kaduna Central Senatorial District, has outlined twelve critical factors that he believes are undermining the education sector in Northern Nigeria, with insecurity topping the list. The senator made the revelations in a Facebook post on Monday, emphasizing that issues such as terrorism, banditry, and poor infrastructure are major impediments to educational progress.
Senator Sani explained that the factors contributing to the region’s educational crisis are numerous and complex. He highlighted insecurity, including the ongoing threats from terrorists and bandits, as the primary challenge hindering educational access and quality. Other significant obstacles include inadequate funding for education, poverty, and shortages of qualified teachers.
Additionally, cultural and religious barriers, child labor, discrimination against girls, limited access to technology, and health challenges exacerbate the problem. The increasing number of people living with disabilities and the continued retention of the street Almajiri system are also cited as major concerns.
Sani stressed that the persistent neglect, misplacement, and mismanagement of resources by successive governments have only worsened the situation. He called for immediate and comprehensive attention to these issues to secure a better educational future for the children in Northern Nigeria.
