Former Kaduna Central Senatorial District lawmaker, Shehu Sani, has criticized former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai over his recent political comments, particularly his critique of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its leadership.
Speaking at an event in Abuja on Monday, El-Rufai accused the APC of abandoning its foundational principles and promoting poor leadership. He went on to say that Nigeria’s current leadership problem stems from having leaders who are “illiterates, semi-illiterates, and cunning people.”
In a telephone interview on Tuesday, Shehu Sani responded sharply, accusing El-Rufai of hypocrisy. Sani pointed out that the former governor, who had been known for his tyrannical approach to governance, now seemed to be preaching democracy after his tenure ended.
Sani remarked, “The man with a history of undisguised intolerance to the opposition and a hypersensitive allergy to criticisms has no moral or saintly authority to stand on the pulpit of democracy to preach about good governance.”
He further mocked El-Rufai for his inconsistent political behavior, noting, “El-Rufai demonized the opposition while in power but now embraces them in the wilderness.” Sani likened El-Rufai’s actions to someone bitter over rejection, comparing his shifting political allegiances to someone who would call a Keke Napep a Lamborghini, only to call it a Keke Napep again once thrown out.
Sani also took a jab at El-Rufai’s recent criticisms of President Bola Tinubu’s government, suggesting that El-Rufai’s failure to be appointed to Tinubu’s cabinet had led to his bitterness. He concluded by mocking El-Rufai’s legacy in Kaduna, stating that while the former governor left behind a “heap of garbage” in the state, he now claimed to be preaching hygiene for Nigeria.
