Former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, alongside members of the League of Northern Democrats (LND), has unveiled plans to transform the group into a full-fledged political party. The new party, which will be named the League of National Democrats (LND), intends to challenge the long-standing political dominance of Nigeria’s two major parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Originally formed as a pro-northern movement advocating for governance reforms, the LND is now broadening its vision to include individuals from Southern Nigeria, aiming to establish a more inclusive political platform.
In a statement released in Abuja, the Convener of the League, Dr. Umar Ardo, expressed strong dissatisfaction with the leadership of both the APC and PDP. He accused the two parties of failing to tackle Nigeria’s most pressing issues, leading the country into a cycle of self-interest and dishonesty.
“The PDP and APC, along with other existing political parties, have not only failed to address Nigeria’s fundamental challenges but have also demonstrated no intention of doing so,” Ardo remarked.
Ardo further criticized the governance style of both parties, describing it as lacking patriotism and sacrifice. He argued that the country’s political trajectory has led to stagnation, calling for a radical shift in the nation’s leadership. LND’s agenda will focus on combating poverty, insecurity, corruption, and institutional decay.
With plans to extend its reach into the Southern regions, LND aims to unite and form a national political force that will push for democratic renewal and institutional reforms. Ardo highlighted that the LND’s approach would set it apart from the APC and PDP by offering a credible alternative based on honesty, patriotism, and democratic values.
