“Shocking Escape: Two Key Suspects Flee Police Custody in Azuka Murder Case”
The Anambra State Police Command is under investigation following the daring escape of two key suspects linked to the brutal killing of Anambra State House of Assembly member, Justice Azuka. Azuka, who represented the Onitsha 1 Constituency, was tragically abducted on December 24, 2024, and his body was discovered on February 6, 2025, on the Second Niger Bridge.
In response to the shocking escape, Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Somtochukwu Udeze, has demanded the immediate re-arrest of the fugitives, urging swift action from law enforcement.
The Shocking Escape
Two suspects, initially arrested in connection with Azuka’s murder, made a bold escape just days after their capture. This startling development came to light when Anambra State Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed their flight on Tuesday. According to Ikenga, the suspects managed to break free in the Obosi area of Idemili North LGA while being escorted by police operatives from the Awkuzu Command. Despite the escape, police were able to apprehend the receiver of stolen vehicles associated with the gang, recovering two vehicles linked to the crime.
Ikenga explained that while the suspects were handcuffed, the challenging terrain of the swampy area aided their daring escape. A thorough investigation is now underway to determine whether any negligence on the part of police personnel contributed to the escape. The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has promised strict disciplinary measures for any officers found responsible.
Anambra Assembly Demands Action
The escape has raised concerns among lawmakers, with Speaker Udeze issuing a stern statement calling for immediate action to track down and recapture the suspects. Expressing regret over the turn of events, Udeze emphasized the need for the police to uphold the integrity of the investigation, adding that the state legislature expects the authorities to act swiftly to bring the fugitives to justice. He further urged the Commissioner of Police to ensure the suspects are formally declared wanted, with their identities and photographs published to rally public support in their capture.
Ongoing Investigation
Despite the escape, police have made significant progress in the case. Officers have arrested several individuals linked to Azuka’s murder, including the alleged financier of the gang, whose identity will soon be disclosed. Investigators have also recovered two operational vehicles— a black Lexus 350 SUV and a Toyota RAV4—used during the abduction and killing of Azuka.
Ikenga confirmed that the police will continue their efforts to dismantle the criminal network involved, with priority given to locating and apprehending the escaped suspects. “We will ensure that justice is served, and those responsible for this heinous act are held accountable,” he assured.
The incident has underscored the challenges faced by the Anambra Police in maintaining control of high-profile investigations, with public confidence now hinging on the swift re-arrest of the fugitives.
