Sokoto Governor Flags Off AGILE Program, Disburses N66 Million for School Improvement
Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has officially launched the Adolescent Girl’s Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) program, aiming to enhance education and empower adolescent girls in the state. This initiative is part of the state’s broader agenda to improve educational outcomes and provide life skills, financial support, and better access to education for young girls.
During the launch, Governor Aliyu also disbursed N200,000 imprest to 330 school principals across Sokoto, totaling N66 million. This funding will be used to enhance the learning environment and rehabilitate infrastructure in secondary schools. The grants will also support the provision of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities, ensuring that schools are safe, conducive, and equipped for effective teaching and learning.
Aliyu emphasized the importance of educating girls, describing it as an investment in the future of not just the girls, but their families, communities, and the nation as a whole. “When we educate a girl-child, we empower not only her but her entire family, her community, and ultimately, our state and nation,” he said.
As part of his administration’s commitment to improving education, Governor Aliyu also reintroduced the School Feeding Programme, benefiting 23 boarding schools and 17,367 students. The state government is allocating a substantial N680.8 million annually to sustain this initiative.
In addition, the governor revealed that his government has made significant strides in school infrastructure, including the construction of 147 classrooms, renovation of 142 others, and the provision of 208 VIP toilets. Other investments include the construction of boreholes, fencing, and new sporting facilities in public schools.
Aliyu further assured that the 2,000 newly hired teachers would be deployed to secondary and nomadic schools across the state, reinforcing the state’s educational system.
The AGILE initiative is expected to be a game-changer in the state’s educational landscape, and the governor urged principals, school committees, and local authorities to ensure transparency and judicious use of the funds. He also stressed that monitoring committees would oversee projects to guarantee quality outcomes.
In a goodwill message, the Minister of State for Works, Bello Muhammad Goronyo, praised the governor for his transformational efforts in sectors like education, health, security, and youth empowerment.
