“Sokoto Pensioners Call for Inclusion in New N70,000 Minimum Wage Structure”
The Sokoto State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has called on Governor Ahmad Aliyu to extend the recently approved N70,000 minimum wage to pensioners across the state. Alhaji Nasiru Sarkin Larabawa, the Union’s Secretary, made the appeal in a statement, highlighting the economic challenges faced by retirees.
“Pensioners who dedicated 35 years of service to the state deserve to benefit from this new wage structure. Many of them are finding it difficult to provide for their families due to the rising cost of living,” Larabawa stated.
He acknowledged Governor Aliyu’s commitment to developing Sokoto State, particularly in ensuring the timely payment of pensions and gratuities. However, Larabawa urged the governor to extend the same financial relief to pensioners by incorporating them into the newly approved wage plan.
“We appreciate His Excellency’s efforts in prioritizing pension payments and gratuity allocations. However, we urge him to extend the same financial relief to pensioners,” he added.
The National Union of Pensioners (NUP) also expressed their gratitude for the governor’s continued support and pledged to formally issue a letter of appreciation.
“The administration has shown concern for retirees, and we recognize his commitment,” the statement read.
It will be recalled that Governor Ahmad Aliyu recently announced the immediate implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage for all state civil servants, local government employees, and the local government education authority.
