Sokoto State Government Pledges Support to Victims of Devastating Kara Market Fire

The Sokoto State Government has expressed its deepest condolences and pledged to support the victims of a devastating fire that ravaged the ‘Karar-‘Yan-Nika’ section of Kara Market in Sokoto. The fire, which broke out recently, destroyed over 50 shops and caused significant losses for traders, leaving many businesses in ruins.

The inferno, which took a heavy toll on the market, led to the destruction of 132 grinding machines and a large quantity of essential food items, including rice, millet, and beans. The financial damage from the blaze has been estimated to run into millions of naira, with many livelihoods at risk.

In response to the tragedy, Sokoto’s Deputy Governor, Alhaji Idris Gobir, led a delegation to visit the affected area and offer his sympathy to the traders. His visit underscored the state government’s commitment to addressing the crisis and providing support to those who have suffered.

During his visit, Gobir announced the formation of a special committee tasked with assessing the full extent of the damage caused by the fire. The committee will also explore strategies to prevent future incidents, especially given the seasonal risk posed by the harmattan.

Gobir emphasized the heightened risk of fires during the dry and windy harmattan period, urging market traders and residents to take necessary fire prevention measures. He stressed the importance of vigilance and preparedness to prevent similar disasters in the future.

Assuring the victims of the government’s commitment, the Deputy Governor stated that the administration would act swiftly and decisively once the committee submits its report and recommendations. Gobir reiterated the government’s dedication to providing relief and assisting the traders in rebuilding their businesses.

The Sokoto State Government’s prompt response reflects its ongoing efforts to support the local economy and ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens during these difficult times.
