“Sokoto State Implements New N70,000 Minimum Wage for Civil Servants”
Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has announced the immediate implementation of the new N70,000 national minimum wage for all state civil servants, local government employees, and staff of the Local Government Education Authority, effective from Monday.
In a statement released by the governor’s Press Secretary, Abubakar Bawa, Governor Aliyu emphasized that the move reflects his administration’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of workers in the state. He also called on civil servants to match the wage increase with a renewed sense of dedication and professionalism in their duties.
“With the commencement of this new national minimum wage, we expect our civil servants to show increased commitment, hard work, punctuality, and, above all, seriousness,” the statement quoted the governor as saying.
Governor Aliyu further reassured the state’s workforce that his administration remains committed to the timely payment of salaries. He confirmed that salaries will continue to be disbursed between the 19th and 22nd of each month, reinforcing Sokoto’s reputation as a worker-friendly state.
In addition to the wage increase, Governor Aliyu has prioritized clearing the backlog of gratuities owed to retired workers. His government has allocated N500 million monthly to pay off outstanding gratuities, with an additional N300 million designated for retirees who left service in 2023 and beyond.
“This strategy will ensure that by the time my administration ends, no civil servant will be left with unpaid gratuities,” the governor stated.
Aliyu also contrasted his administration’s progress with past governments, noting that under previous regimes, salary payments were often delayed by more than 50 days, leaving workers in financial uncertainty.
