“Sokoto State Joins Forces with UNDP to Develop Groundbreaking Climate Change Policy”

The Sokoto State Government, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has launched a major initiative to develop an extensive climate change policy aimed at addressing critical environmental challenges and fostering sustainable development.

The initiative was officially introduced during a two-day validation session, jointly organized by the UNDP and the Sokoto State Ministry of Environment. The session focused on fine-tuning the proposed policy to ensure its effectiveness in tackling climate-related issues.

Mustapha Alkali, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and representative of Commissioner Nura Shehu Tangaza, emphasized the importance of the policy in shaping the future of the state. He underscored that environmental sustainability is vital for good governance, peace, and comprehensive development, stating, “A sound environment guarantees a sound society. Without it, advancement is impossible.”

The draft policy prioritizes reducing the effects of climate change, cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions, and building resilience against environmental changes. Key actions include setting measurable goals, encouraging accountability, and fostering greater cooperation among all relevant stakeholders.

The policy also aims to serve as a framework for integrating climate considerations into governance, ensuring that environmental protection remains a central focus at every level of decision-making. During the discussions, participants stressed the importance of collective action and collaboration to implement effective solutions.

Once finalized, the climate change policy will provide practical measures for safeguarding both the environmental and economic well-being of Sokoto State. The focus will be on reducing emissions, addressing climate-related challenges, and promoting sustainable practices to secure a greener, more resilient future for the state.
