“Sowore Granted Bail, Rejects Compromising Conditions”
Omoyele Sowore, the former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has announced that he has been granted bail after a recent engagement with the Force Intelligence Department (FID) of the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja. However, Sowore made it clear that he would reject any bail conditions that compromised his “innocence, dignity, and integrity.”
In a series of posts on his social media platform X, Sowore revealed that the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) of the FID, Dasuki Galandachi, informed him that he would be granted bail pending the conclusion of an ongoing investigation. However, Sowore emphasized his stance on rejecting any unreasonable conditions tied to his release.
“I have advised the DIG that in accepting ‘bail,’ I will not agree to conditions that compromise my innocence, dignity, and integrity,” Sowore wrote. “If such unreasonable conditions are imposed, I will choose to remain in detention until I am charged to court. Even then, I know there is no crime defined or to be investigated—it is just the impunity that has become the hallmark of the @PoliceNG hierarchy.”
Sowore went on to say that he had rejected a condition which required him to present a level 17 Permanent Secretary. Instead, he offered to remain in police custody until the situation is resolved.
Earlier, Sowore shared that he had completed an engagement with the police from the FID, in Abuja, amid claims from the police that he had obstructed public officers. This was reportedly linked to a video Sowore recorded during an altercation with police officers at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport access road in Lagos.
Sowore’s bail comes after he was summoned for questioning over the investigation, which involves accusations of causing harm or attempting to prevent arrest. Despite this, Sowore has insisted that he is prepared to face any consequences, continuing to assert his innocence.
