Sowore Reacts to Retired DSP’s N1.7 Million Gratuity, Criticizes Nigeria’s Treatment of Workers

Popular activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has condemned the alleged payment of N1.7 million as gratuity to retired Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) in Nigeria.

a retired DSP, Esther Marcus, shared a viral video in which she claimed that after serving for 35 years in the Nigeria Police Force, she was paid just N1.7 million as gratuity. She further revealed that her monthly pension was set at N40,000. Esther, who allegedly retired in 2018, expressed her disappointment over the meager payment.

Reacting to the video, Sowore criticized the Nigerian government, describing it as doing nothing but “evil to its workers.” He labeled the situation as a sad reality and highlighted the stark contrast between the remuneration of politicians and those who serve in public service roles.

On his X handle, Sowore questioned how a Nigerian senator could receive N29 million per month, while a retired DSP who dedicated 35 years to service gets only N1.7 million. He wrote, “How on earth is anyone who worked for 35 years paid N1.7m ($1,100) as gratuity?”

Sowore further expressed his frustration, stating, “This is a retired DSP of @policeng speaking about her pension and gratuity after retiring from the Nigerian Police Farce. This is so sad!”

He also pointed out the irony of police officers being paid such a low amount while senators enjoy exorbitant salaries, adding that these same officers could be willing to “kill you in a heartbeat” for challenging the very system that oppresses ordinary Nigerians.
