Stop Attacking Journalists, IBAN Tells Police, Others
The Independent Broadcasting Association of Nigeria (IBAN) has asked the police and other law enforcement agencies to stop attacking journalists covering the ongoing protests against hunger and bad governance.
The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen. Christopher Musa on Friday said journalists should not cover the protests. According to him, coverage of the protests gives oxygen to the protesters.
In a statement at the weekend, the association expressed concerns over the harassment and assaults on journalists performing their constitutional duties.
Chairman Ahmed Ramalan asked the government to protect journalists and uphold their rights as they cover the nationwide protests.
He emphasised that while maintaining law and order is crucial, protecting journalists and enabling them to inform the public without fear of harm is equally important.
Ramalan said: “IBAN appeals to the heads of Police and security agen – cies to instruct their operatives to cease further attacks on journalists.”
