Suspended UNICAL Dean, Prof. Ndifon, Fails To Appear Before Panel Investigating Sexual Harassment Claims
The suspended Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Calabar (UNICAL) in Nigeria has failed to appear before a panel investigating allegations of sexual harassment made against him by female students.
Professor Cyril Ndifon was accused by current and former law students of inappropriate sexual misconduct and demands. This prompted protests on campus in August 2022 calling for his removal as dean.
Although Ndifon claimed the harassment allegations were false and politically motivated, UNICAL suspended him from his position and constituted a panel to probe the complaints.
Despite being invited four times, Ndifon refused to appear before the investigative panel to defend himself against the accusations. Sources say he arrogantly disregarded the summons and opportunities to present his side.
The public hearings have now concluded without input from Ndifon. The lawyer representing the aggrieved students confirmed that the dean never showed up throughout the process.
Ndifon now faces an uphill task in defending himself and avoiding punitive action if the panel upholds the sexual harassment claims made by the bold law students. His non-cooperation with authorities will likely work against him when UNICAL reviews the findings and recommendations.
The outcome of the investigation into the serious abuse of power allegations against the law faculty dean will be pivotal for accountability and female empowerment at the university.
