Tension in Taraba: Labour Declares Statewide Strike Over ‘Biometric Scam’
Taraba Labour Declares Indefinite Strike Over Alleged Irregularities in Biometric Data Capture
Organised labour in Taraba State has declared a statewide indefinite strike set to begin on Monday, August 11, 2025, in protest against alleged irregularities by the state’s Biometric Data Capture Committee.
In a joint statement signed by NLC Chairman Peter Jediel and TUC Chairman Sule Abasu, the labour unions—under the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC)—said the decision followed a resolution reached during a Joint State Administrative Council meeting held on August 6.
The unions accused the biometric committee of engaging in illegal practices that have negatively impacted workers, citing a lack of transparency and accountability. They also blamed the Taraba State Government for ignoring an earlier ultimatum issued by labour.
“The leadership was mandated to collaborate with other stakeholders to check the illegality perpetrated by the biometric data capture committee,” the statement said.
Strike Begins August 11
According to the communiqué, the strike will proceed as follows:
-
Strike action begins at dawn on Monday, August 11, 2025
-
Mobilisation of workers and stakeholders has commenced
-
All workers, CSOs, and residents are advised to stock up on essential supplies
Labour Sets Up Enforcement Committees
Labour has directed all affiliate unions and civil society organisations to form strike implementation committees across ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to ensure full compliance.
The move signals escalating tension between the state government and the labour movement, with potential to cripple government operations and public services in the coming days.
As of press time, the Taraba State Government has not issued any official response.
