Timi Frank Urges Tinubu to Declare Abiola Winner of 1993 Election Following IBB’s Admission
Comrade Timi Frank, the former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has urged President Bola Tinubu to officially declare Chief Moshood Abiola, the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), as the rightful winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
In a statement issued on Friday, Frank emphasized the importance of this action, especially following former military president General Ibrahim Babangida’s (rtd) recent acknowledgment of the legitimacy of the election results. Babangida, during the public presentation of his book A Journey in Service, openly admitted that MKO Abiola won the June 12 election, attributing the annulment of the results to external pressures from General Sani Abacha and other forces.
Frank argued that with this acknowledgment, there is no longer a reason for President Tinubu to delay the official declaration of Abiola as president. He suggested that Tinubu could take immediate steps by sending a bill to the National Assembly that would legally validate the June 12 election results and recognize Abiola’s victory.
“It is long overdue,” Frank stated. “Tinubu, who was at the forefront of the June 12 struggle, now has the chance to ensure Abiola receives the presidential recognition and entitlements he deserves.”
Frank’s call highlights the ongoing significance of June 12 in Nigeria’s history and the importance of rectifying the injustice done to MKO Abiola, whose mandate was stolen by the annulment over three decades ago.
