President Bola Tinubu has expressed his immense satisfaction with the re-opening of the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC), marking a significant milestone in his administration’s efforts to boost Nigeria’s refining capacity. The refinery, which had been inactive for years, resumed operations on Monday, continuing the positive trend set by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) when it restarted the 60,000-barrels-per-day capacity at the Port Harcourt Refinery last month.
In a statement released by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu commended the successful restoration of WRPC, highlighting it as a major achievement that strengthens Nigerians’ confidence in his administration’s economic agenda. The reactivation of the Warri Refinery is part of the broader strategy to ramp up local refining capacity and turn Nigeria into a leading hub for downstream industrial activities in Africa.
The Warri Refinery, now operating at 60% capacity with a potential output of 125,000 barrels per day, is a key element of the administration’s drive for energy security and efficiency. Tinubu praised the Mele Kyari-led NNPCL management for their dedication to revitalizing the country’s refining infrastructure and restoring Nigeria’s standing as a prominent oil producer.
“I am thrilled to see the Warri Refinery back in operation today,” said President Tinubu. “This is a remarkable achievement that brings joy to me and to Nigerians as we end the year on a high note. It reinforces the promise we made to Nigerians for a brighter future. I am pleased that NNPC Limited is fulfilling my directive to return all four refineries to optimal working condition.”
The president also congratulated Mele Kyari and the NNPCL team for their hard work and commitment to reviving Nigeria’s oil refining capabilities. He further urged NNPCL to speed up efforts to repair the Kaduna Refinery and the second refinery in Port Harcourt to solidify Nigeria’s position as a global energy provider.
With the Warri Refinery now operational, it will focus on producing critical products such as Straight Run Kerosene (SRK), Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), and both heavy and light Naphtha, key to enhancing local energy supplies and boosting the national economy.
