Tinubu Arrives Brazil For 2024 G20 Summit

President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to participate in the 19th Heads of State and Government Summit of the G20.

The President touched down at 11:03pm local time on Sunday (3:03am Nigerian time on Monday) and was received by Ambassador Breno Costa of Brazil’s Ministry of External Relations.

Accompanying President Tinubu are several high-ranking officials, including Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, Livestock Development Minister Idi Mukhtar Maiha, and Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Art, Tourism, Culture, and Creativity. Other members of the delegation include Agriculture and Food Security Minister of State Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi and National Intelligence Agency Director-General Amb. Mohammed Mohammed.

The G20 Summit, hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, runs from November 18 to 19 with the theme, “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet.” Discussions will focus on sustainable development across economic, social, and environmental dimensions, alongside reforming global governance.

Key agenda items include addressing global hunger, poverty, and inequality, the Israel-Hamas conflict, U.S.-China tensions, and global climate challenges. President Lula da Silva, who assumed the G20 presidency in December 2023, has emphasised food security as a central priority.

Representatives of the African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU), alongside leaders of 19 member-nations, including the US, China, India, and South Africa, will attend the summit.

President Tinubu is expected to hold bilateral talks on the sidelines of the summit to advance Nigeria’s socio-economic priorities.

President Tinubu received his invitation to the summit in August from Brazilian Ambassador to Nigeria Carlos Areias, who highlighted food security as pivotal to Brazil’s agenda for eliminating extreme poverty by 2030.
