Tinubu to Police: Power Is for Protection, Not Intimidation
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a stern warning to officers and men of the Nigerian Police Force, emphasizing that their power must be used to protect, not intimidate, the Nigerian people. Represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio at the 2nd Annual Inspector General of Police (IGP) Awards and Commendation Ceremony in Abuja on Wednesday night, Tinubu called for integrity, accountability, and professionalism within the Force.
“Be reminded that the power you wield is not for intimidation but for protection. It is not for abuse but for service,” Tinubu stated.
“Uphold the rule of law, protect the rights of every citizen, and reject all forms of misconduct and corruption.”
The president reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to equipping the Nigerian Police with modern tools, technology, and training necessary for effective and responsible policing. He stressed that community trust is vital to national security.
“This administration remains steadfast in its commitment to the transformation of the Nigeria Police Force,” he said.
“We understand that modern policing demands modern tools, continuous training, intelligence-led strategies, and community partnership.”
Addressing the honorees at the event, Tinubu praised their dedication and urged them not to become complacent.
“You have reminded us of what is possible when duty meets dedication and service is driven by honour. But do not rest on your laurels. Let this recognition inspire you to reach greater heights.”
He described the event not just as a celebration but a call to renewed service — one rooted in values that restore public confidence in the police.
