Tinubu Urges Global Action on Climate Change at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week”
On the second day of the 2025 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, President Bola Tinubu addressed the global forum on the theme “From Climate Imperatives into Economic Prosperity: Bridging Africa with the Global Energy Future.” In his speech, the president emphasized the need for global unity in tackling climate change, asserting that no nation can navigate the path to sustainability alone. He called for collective action, knowledge sharing, and mutual support in addressing the challenges ahead.
“The fight against climate change is not just an environmental necessity but a massive economic opportunity to reshape our continent and the global energy landscape,” President Tinubu stated. “As leaders and citizens of the planet, we are at a critical point in human history. To succeed, we must innovate, collaborate, and act decisively as one global community.”
Highlighting his administration’s commitment to environmental sustainability, President Tinubu assured the audience that Nigeria has developed actionable programs aligned with global climate goals, while considering its unique economic and political context. He outlined three key pillars for Nigeria’s sustainability efforts: Energy Transition, Climate Resilience, and Sustainable Development.
“We are committed to reducing carbon emissions while ensuring a just transition to clean and renewable energy. Our strategy prioritizes cleaner energy sources as a cornerstone of our national development,” Tinubu said.
The president also shared that Nigeria is advancing infrastructure for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicles, and exploring the potential of solid minerals to support the green energy transition. Furthermore, Nigeria is implementing climate-smart agricultural practices to enhance food security and reduce environmental damage. The introduction of the National Clean Cooking Policy, aimed at promoting clean energy and its socio-economic benefits, was also highlighted as a key initiative.
Addressing Nigeria’s environmental challenges, Tinubu acknowledged the serious issues of deforestation, desertification, coastal erosion, flooding, and pollution, which threaten millions of livelihoods. He called for international collaboration to mobilize resources, embrace innovation, and support a green economy in Africa. “These investments are capital-intensive and require support from our international partners, multinational organizations, and individuals who share our vision for a sustainable, equitable future,” he emphasized.
Tinubu also pointed to Nigeria’s pioneering role in Africa, being the first nation to initiate green projects funding through Sovereign Green Bonds, with the third issuance already in progress. He urged investors to partner with Nigeria in this area, while assuring them that the Nigerian government is committed to providing an enabling environment for businesses to flourish.
The president concluded his address by commending the President of the United Arab Emirates, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, for his foresight in organizing the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, which brought together world leaders to share ideas and perspectives on how to collectively address the pressing challenges of climate change and sustainability.
