Tragedy in Ibadan: 10 Feared Dead as Truck Loses Control at Soka
Tragedy struck in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Tuesday as a ghastly road accident at Soka area reportedly claimed the lives of no fewer than 10 people.
The fatal crash, which plunged the area into chaos, involved three articulated trucks and a commercial Micra car.
Eyewitnesses told Vanguard that one of the trucks lost control and rammed into the other vehicles, causing a devastating chain reaction that left several victims trapped and badly injured.
Rescue efforts were frantic as passersby rushed to the scene, using cutlasses and makeshift tools in a desperate attempt to free victims, particularly the driver of the Micra car, who remained trapped under the wreckage as of press time.
A resident, Mr. Aderogba Daniel, recounted the harrowing scene: “The vehicles were coming from the Iwo Road axis when one of the trucks suddenly veered off the road and smashed into the others. It was a terrible sight.”
Shortly after, officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) arrived at the scene and began evacuating the injured to nearby hospitals.
“From the condition of the victims, I doubt if the death toll will be less than 10,” Mr. Aderogba added grimly.
An FRSC officer at the scene confirmed the incident but declined to provide official casualty figures, promising to release more details later.
The accident caused heavy traffic gridlock along the usually busy Soka road, as residents, sympathisers, and emergency responders struggled to clear the wreckage.
