“Tragic Loss: EFCC Operative Slumps and Dies in Lagos”
A yet-to-be-identified officer of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) attached to the Lagos Division tragically collapsed and died on Sunday in an undisclosed part of Lagos State. At the time of the incident, the officer was not in uniform.
A disturbing video circulating on social media shows the lifeless body of the officer surrounded by bystanders, including police officers who conducted a search of the deceased’s bag. During this search, an EFCC identification card was found, confirming the officer’s affiliation with the anti-graft agency.
The voice of an observer in the video can be heard saying, “He works with EFCC. His ID card is with him.”
On Monday, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed the incident, stating that the death of the officer is currently under investigation. “Yes, the man is our officer. His death is being investigated. The incident happened on Sunday,” Oyewale said.
This incident comes just two weeks after another tragedy involving the EFCC, when Assistant Superintendent Aminu Salisu was shot during a raid in Onitsha, Anambra State, by a suspected internet fraudster. Salisu’s team had been ambushed while attempting to arrest cyber criminals.
Oyewale condemned the negative narratives surrounding the officer’s death and assured the public that the commission would ensure justice is served. While the cause of the Lagos officer’s death remains unclear, the EFCC is conducting a thorough investigation. The commission has yet to release further details about the deceased officer’s identity or the exact circumstances surrounding his sudden collapse.
