University of Ilorin VC Calls for Unity Amid Factional Leadership Dispute
Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, has expressed his dissatisfaction with the undue media attention given to Dr. Wale Fasakin, the factional president of the university’s alumni association. Fasakin’s four-year tenure officially ended in March 2024, but he has refused to step down, despite multiple interventions from the university’s management, including direct involvement from the Vice Chancellor to ensure unity within the association.
At a press conference unveiling the university’s 50th anniversary logo on Monday, Professor Egbewole stated, “The media is giving him undue attention. Dr. Fasakin’s tenure is for a specific term; he is not a life president, and his term ended in March 2024. Should he still be parading himself as president in 2025? Absolutely not!”
The Vice Chancellor further emphasized that the University of Ilorin Alumni Association is a reputable and responsible body that the university holds in high regard. Egbewole also underscored that 2025 marks the university’s golden anniversary and stressed the institution’s vision for the future, focusing on infrastructure development and academic excellence.
In his speech, Professor Egbewole unveiled the logo for the 50th anniversary celebration and reiterated his commitment to the university’s 2024–2028 strategic plan. The plan aims to elevate the university to world-class status, enhance research, strengthen community engagement, and improve infrastructure. The VC also highlighted the university’s progress in producing graduates equipped with entrepreneurial skills, ensuring they are job creators rather than job seekers.
Additionally, plans are in place for the university to engage with surrounding communities to identify and address their unique challenges, furthering the university’s role in societal development.
Professor Olugbenga Mokuolu, Chairman of the 50th Anniversary Ceremonial Committee, explained the meaning behind the anniversary logo, which represents the university’s aspirations and vision as it marks this significant milestone.
