UNIZIK Denies Student Death Reports, Confirms Victim Was Electrician Who Jumped from Building Near Campus
The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, has refuted claims that a university student died after jumping from a three-storey building near the campus.
In an official statement signed by Chief Safety Officer Ken Chukwurah, the university clarified that the deceased was not a student but an electrician named Kenneth Oyeaka Rapuchukwu.
The tragic incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at Seat of Wisdom Lodge, Royal Kitchen Junction, Ifite, close to the university’s main gate.
Neighbours reportedly heard a loud noise and found Rapuchukwu’s body lying in a pool of blood. Witnesses said he jumped headfirst from the top floor after consuming an illicit substance.
The university’s preliminary investigation suggests that both Rapuchukwu and his roommate, identified as Chibuzor, were under the influence of a suspected illicit substance before the incident.
“On June 5, 2025, at about 2000 hours, at Seat of Wisdom Lodge, Royal Kitchen Junction, Ifite in Awka LGA, one Kenneth Oyeaka Rapuchukwu, aged 28, an electrician from Aguleri, plunged from the third storey of the building and died at the scene,” Chukwurah stated.
Rapuchukwu’s body has been deposited at Amaku mortuary, while Chibuzor is currently in custody at B-Division Police Station to assist with the investigation.
The university urged the public to disregard the earlier viral reports wrongly identifying the deceased as a student, emphasizing ongoing efforts to ensure safety and order in the area.
