“Usman Yusuf Faces Trial for Embezzlement as Court Orders His Remand”
The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of Usman Yusuf, the former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), at Kuje Correctional Centre. The order followed Yusuf’s arraignment before Justice Chinyere E. Nwecheonwu on charges of embezzlement and fraud.
Yusuf is facing five counts of corruption, including allegations of misappropriating a staggering ninety million, four hundred and thirty-nine thousand, one hundred and seventy-eight Naira. The charges, brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), were read before the court on Monday.
Following his plea, Yusuf’s defense lawyer, O.I. Habeeb, requested that his client remain in EFCC custody until the hearing of his bail application. However, Justice Nwecheonwu rejected the request, citing the legal procedure that custody is transferred to the Nigerian Correctional Service once a defendant is arraigned.
Consequently, the court ordered that Yusuf be detained at Kuje Correctional Centre and adjourned the hearing of his bail application to February 12, 2025. The case has drawn significant attention due to Yusuf’s high-profile position within the NHIS and the serious nature of the charges against him.
