Valentine Ozigbo Sees No Future for Labour Party, Says Obi Won’t Run for President Under LP
Valentine Ozigbo, a former governorship candidate in Anambra State and key ally of former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi, has expressed doubt about the future of the Labour Party. Ozigbo made this statement while noting that he does not believe Obi will run for president again under the LP platform.
In 2022, Ozigbo resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined LP to support Obi’s presidential bid. However, on February 19, he defected from the Labour Party to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing his “unwavering commitment” to the greater vision for Anambra State.
In his resignation letter, Ozigbo informed Obi of his decision as a “mark of deep respect” for his leadership, despite their political separation. However, speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, Ozigbo revealed his skepticism about the Labour Party’s future.
“I don’t see a future for the Labour Party,” Ozigbo said. “I’m happy to live with that assertion, and I would like to be proven wrong.”
He also added that Peter Obi’s political journey — having switched from the ANPP to APGA, PDP, and later to Labour Party — suggests he would not run for the presidency under the LP banner again. “If he wishes to run for election, it’s not going to be under the Labour Party,” Ozigbo confidently stated. While clarifying that he was not Obi’s spokesperson, he shared his insights from many discussions about potential political coalitions, hinting at a different political path for Obi in the future.
