Valentine: Rivers CP, wife host 200 slain officers’ widows, pledge support
Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, has pledged continued support to widows of late police officers who died in active service.
He said such support underscores the commitment of the state police command to the wellbeing and welfare of the families the deceased policemen left behind, especially their children.
Disu gave the assurance at a special event organized by the Police Officers Wives’ Association to celebrate widows of late officers as part of the ‘Valentine’s Day’ in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.
Disu said the widows are representing the interest of the police in taking care of the children their husbands left behind, saying they cannot be forgotten because their spouses died while providing security.
The Rivers CP stated, “They died fighting for this country and we should not just close our eyes to it. We should remember them again and again.
“That is why today we are here to solidarise with you to remember them and pray for them and to remember those of us still alive and still doing this job of providing security and protecting lives.
“You are the ones giving succor to all the children of departed police officers. I pray to the Almighty God to continue to guide you.
“I have instructed our Divisional Police Officers and my management team that in every problem you have bring to our attention, we will listen and solve your problem.”
He explained that the event was an initiative of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who he said directed that the late officers’ wives should be carried along in the scheme of things as a mark of solidarity and encouragement.
In her remark, the chairperson of POWA and wife of the Rivers CP, Mrs Mutiat Olufunmilola Disu, expressed gratitude to God for the enabling POWA to show love to late officers wives on the special day.
She said the roles their husbands played in the fight for a better policing while alive cannot be undermined, saying, “Valentine is not for our spouses alone, but to extend it to our loved ones.”
The coordinator of Late Police Officers Wives, Mrs. Josephine Okafor, in an emotion-laden speech, said it was the first time widows of late policemen are celebrated and remember for good.
Mrs Okoafor expressed appreciation to the CP for the gesture, saying it has impacted greatly on them and prayed God to keep the commissioner and his men for greater achievement.
High point of the event was the distribution of food items, including bags of rice and undisclosed amount of money to about 200 widows of deceased police officers.
