Vandals Attack Abuja Power Lines Again, Disrupting Electricity Supply
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported that electricity lines supplying power to various parts of Abuja have once again fallen victim to vandals. In a statement issued on Friday, TCN’s Public Affairs Manager, Ndidi Mbah, confirmed the attack occurred in the early hours at the 132kv transmission line and underground cable that transmits bulk power to the 132kv Central Area transmission substation in Katampe, Abuja.
The attack has led to a significant disruption in electricity supply, particularly affecting areas such as Maitama, Wuse, and Garki. The incident impacted eight distribution feeders serving the Central Area, resulting in over 60% of the capital’s power supply being cut off.
While expressing concern over the ongoing wave of vandalism targeting power infrastructure, TCN revealed that a team of engineers had been dispatched to repair the damage and restore power in the affected areas as quickly as possible. Mbah also appealed for patience from residents while repairs are underway.
The company suspects the vandalism was carried out by unknown individuals around the Menillum Park axis of Abuja. The vandals reportedly stole 40 meters of 1x500mm conductor from two 132kv transmission lines, further exacerbating the power crisis. Areas such as Jabi, Lifecamp, Asokoro, Utako, Mabushi, and even parts of the Presidential Villa were impacted.
TCN also urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and protect the nation’s critical transmission infrastructure. The rising frequency of these attacks has led to significant financial losses, with the government spending N8.8 billion last year to repair 128 damaged electricity towers nationwide.
