“Votes Must Count!” – Adegboruwa Warns Against Hollow Democracy

In a statement released on Friday, June 13, 2025, Adegboruwa described the honoured individuals as worthy representatives of Nigeria’s democratic struggle. He commended the recognition extended by President Bola Tinubu, saying those celebrated were “symbols of that struggle” who embodied the fight against military dictatorship.

“They represent the collective sacrifice of our people against tyranny,” he said. “Everyone who contributed to the June 12 movement is, in one way or another, represented in this recognition.”

However, Adegboruwa voiced concern that several unsung heroes of the struggle remained unacknowledged. He listed numerous civil society leaders and activists — including Chidi Odinkalu, Omoyele Sowore, Olisa Agbakoba, Frank Kokori, and Nike Ransome-Kuti — who, he said, also deserve national honour.

“Many of these individuals lost their lives or liberties in the fight for democracy,” he emphasized. “We must remember them too.”

Despite applauding the gesture, Adegboruwa cautioned the current administration against reducing June 12 to a symbolic exercise. He stressed that the spirit of June 12 would remain unfulfilled unless Nigeria embraces credible elections, respects human rights, and ensures transparent governance.

“June 12 means nothing if we continue to deny Nigerians the right to choose their leaders freely,” he warned. “Awards without action amount to political tokenism.”

The SAN also condemned persistent issues such as insecurity, poverty, institutional weakness, and electoral malpractice, arguing that they contradict the values for which June 12 martyrs fought.

“If poverty is still being weaponized, if insecurity still thrives, and if our institutions remain toothless, then the goals of June 12 have been betrayed,” he declared.

He concluded with a call to conscience:

“Let us honour June 12 not just with medals, but with justice, reforms, and real democracy. God bless Nigeria.”
