We’ll begin comprehensive metering to eliminate estimated billing – MD Mainpower
The Managing Director of MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL), Dr. Ernest Mupwaya, announced the company’s plan to commence comprehensive metering for all customers in Enugu State to eliminate estimated billing.
Dr. Mupwaya shared this development during a stakeholder engagement held on Wednesday at Oakland Hotels, Enugu, where he outlined MainPower’s vision for reliable power supply and customer-focused services.
He revealed that MainPower will begin metering installations next week, prioritizing free installations in high-loss areas, with the goal to meter all customers by 2027. This initiative aims to enhance billing accuracy and transparency, ensuring that customers pay only for the energy they consume, thus promoting fairness and encouraging energy conservation.
“A key part of MainPower’s service improvement plan is rolling out a comprehensive metering program to end estimated billing,” Dr. Mupwaya stated, adding that the initiative is expected to build customer trust and strengthen MainPower’s revenue base.
MainPower, a recently established subsidiary of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), was created to address the specific power needs of Enugu residents, providing reliable, transparent, and efficient energy services.
“The formation of MainPower aligns with Nigeria’s recent regulatory reforms aimed at fostering a customer-centric power distribution system that encourages innovation and greater customer engagement,” Dr. Mupwaya explained.
He outlined the company’s ambitious objective to achieve a 24/7 power supply across Enugu State within three years. This goal will be pursued in phases, beginning with urban and commercial centers, and gradually expanding to all residential customers. Supporting this vision will require substantial infrastructure upgrades and collaboration with independent power producers (IPPs) to secure additional power sources.
MainPower is also partnering with private investors to expedite meter installations and enhance its distribution network. These partnerships are expected to bring in additional resources, expertise, and technology, enabling faster, cost-effective improvements.
“With increased investment in metering and infrastructure, MainPower aims to build a more resilient and reliable distribution network to meet Enugu’s growing electricity demands,” he added.
Engr. Chinedum Ukabara, Commissioner of the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC), affirmed EERC’s commitment to transparent regulation to attract investment into Enugu’s power sector. He encouraged customers to support these initiatives by keeping their bill payments current, as customer cooperation is essential for sustaining the benefits of these reforms.
