Wike Mocks Amaechi: “Hungry for Power, Not Food”

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has taken a swipe at former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, accusing him of misleading Nigerians with recent remarks about hardship under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Wike’s comments came during his monthly media parley in Abuja on Monday, where he responded to Amaechi’s claim that Nigerians are facing widespread hunger—an assertion made during Amaechi’s 60th birthday celebration.

“It’s unfortunate that a man would use his 60th birthday, a day meant to celebrate life, to tell lies,” Wike said. “He said there’s hunger in the land, but the only thing Amaechi is truly hungry for is power.”

Wike recounted Amaechi’s extensive time in public office, criticizing his sudden concern for the nation’s well-being now that he’s no longer in government.

“He was Speaker from 1999 to 2007—the most pompous Speaker, everyone knew. He even lived in London while holding that office. Then he was governor from 2007 to 2015. That’s eight years as Speaker and eight years as Governor, and during all that time, he never once spoke about hunger,” Wike noted.

He went on: “He also served as Minister for eight years. But just two years after leaving office, suddenly he’s talking about hunger? No—he’s just starving for relevance and power.”

Wike concluded by accusing Amaechi of aligning with opposition figures like Atiku Abubakar and Nasir El-Rufai in a desperate bid to return to power.

“He can’t stand being out of power. That’s the real hunger he’s feeling,” Wike said sharply.
