Yobe Government Intensifies Efforts to Address Recurring Floods with Nguru Flood Control Project
The Yobe State government has announced that it is intensifying efforts to find a lasting solution to the recurring flooding and other natural disasters in the state.
This statement was made by the Secretary to the State Government, Baba Mallam Wali, during a meeting with stakeholders and representatives from Enviplan International Limited, a consulting firm engaged in the Nguru Flood Control project.
Wali emphasized that Governor Mai Mala Buni had tasked his office with developing strategies to alleviate the suffering of communities, particularly those living near floodplains. “Governor Mai Mala Buni’s administration has demonstrated its commitment to addressing flood incidences in the state,” he said, adding that the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project was also being directed to address flood issues not only in Nguru Local Government but across other areas in the state.
Shehu Alhaji Mohammed, the Project Coordinator for ACReSAL in Yobe, revealed that Enviplan consulting firm had been tasked with providing a conceptual study for the Nguru Flood Control project design. He also shared that the World Bank had approved the Damaturu/Buni-yadi gully erosion control projects, with a groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for Monday. The ceremony is expected to be attended by the State Governor, the World Bank team, and the Federal Project Management Unit.
During the meeting, the consultants presented three proposed options for the Nguru Flood Control project, with Wali directing the firm to collaborate with ACReSAL and YOGIS technical teams to select the most effective option for implementation.
