Yobe State University VC Urges New SUG Executives to Avoid Social Media Abuse
The Vice-Chancellor of Yobe State University, Prof. Mala Mohammed Daura, has urged the newly elected Executive members of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) to exercise caution in their use of social media, particularly when commenting on university activities.
Prof. Daura, represented by the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Sani Isa, delivered the message on Friday during the inauguration of the new SUG executives at the Geidam Hall of the university. He expressed concern over the abuse of social media by some students and cautioned the new leadership against making unguarded statements that could harm the institution’s reputation.
“While it’s important to voice concerns, students must seek clarification through the proper channels to avoid spreading fake news or engaging in hate speech that could implicate them,” Prof. Daura emphasized.
The Acting Director of ICT at the university, Idi Mohammed, also addressed the students, advising them to be thorough when applying for the NELFUND loan. He pointed out that many students had been making errors in their applications, urging the new SUG executives to lead by example.
Prof. Adam Zarma, Head of the Geology Department, and Prof. Hadiza Mali Bukar, Head of the Public Administration Department, both encouraged the students to prioritize their academic responsibilities over student unionism. They reminded the new leaders of the importance of focusing on their studies while serving the student body.
The event served as a reminder to the new SUG leaders about their responsibilities and the importance of maintaining positive communication within the university.
